What Is a Personnel Tracking System Using Mobile GPS?

GPS is a global positioning system that utilizes data received from a network of satellites in orbit around the earth. The satellites were commissioned by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1970s. In 1983 President Ronald Reagan declassified GPS, making it available for civilian use


How GPS Works
Since GPS satellites travel in a precise orbit, the exact location of a GPS receiver can be tracked by constantly comparing its position to that of the various satellites from which it is receiving transmissions.

Mobile GPS
Tiny GPS receivers are often built into portable devices. Many mobile phones contain GPS technology. GPS devices can also be mounted on cars, clipped onto clothing, placed inside a backpack or worn like a wristwatch.

Personal Tracking Device
While GPS is most often utilized for navigation, a person can carry or wear a GPS device for the purpose of allowing someone to monitor his movements. For privacy reasons, many people may not care to do this, but it is valuable if done for the protection of a child, elderly person or anyone who is vulnerable to getting lost or abducted. A tracking device may also be used to monitor an inanimate object such as a vehicle.
