A GPS (global positioning satellite) works by sending a signal from your device to orbiting satellites, which determine your position. Your location is then sent to a website where you can log in and see it. This can come in handy for finding your way around your home city or when traveling abroad. You can also put the GPS on your dog to keep track of him while you are hiking so that he doesn't get lost. If you don't already have a GPS device, then you can make your own with an Internet enabled mobile phone and a free piece of software
Instructions
1
Choose a GPS tracking service. A few that you can select from include Google Maps for Mobile, Mologogo and Instamapper. As of May 2011 these are all free to use.
2
Create an account on the site by entering a username and password for your login details. Enter your mobile number and cellphone service provider and click "Enter."
3.Open the text message that you receive from the website on your cellphone. Open your phone's Web browser and and follow the link that is provided. This will take you to a download page for the GPS application. Download it and install it on your phone.
4
Go to your phone's "Main Menu" and then to the "Applications" and launch the GPS software. This will begin sending your phone's GPS location to the website.
5
Put your mobile phone into a weather proof casing and put it inside of a dog backpack. Put the backpack on the dog.
6
Log in to your GPS service account on a computer. From there, you can monitor the location of your dog. It will appear as a red blinking dot on a map. As the dog moves so will the dot. It will also give you details such as your dog's longitude, latitude, speed, height and movement direction.
